Protests againsts gay tourists in Dominica

(Kristina alerted me of this issue in the news--thanks!)
Despite the presence of LGBTQ people in most cultures, the article's statement of the religiously conservative attitudes in Dominica makes me wonder if people in Dominica tend to view homosexuality as largely an import from the U.S. and other 'Western' countries. I'm not defending the protests, but if some native Dominicans already felt their nation's economy is too tourist-driven, does the issue of homosexuality further their sense of being morally/economically colonized? I don't know enough about Dominica to make a good judgment about the likelihood of this scenario.
